Before you react, think. Before you spend, earn. Before you criticize, wait. Before you quit, try.
Ernest Hemingway
Our lives become increasingly stressful and this causes a decrease in quality of life. We often find ourselves struggling to reach a balance between private life, family and work, with the feeling of having to pursue increasingly higher standards and never being adequate. We feel insecure and dissatisfied.
Furthermore, it may happen that we carry with us, from our past, unresolved issues and, sometimes, traumatic experiences, which influence our daily life and often result in intolerable emotions, dysfunctional relationships and career difficulties.
We are here to help you find your personal balance and live a fulfilling and worth living life.
Love and the desire for connection are fundamental experiences and primary needs of human beings. Being able to build a healthy relationship is predictive of a happy and satisfying life.
We help our patients achieve this goal by treating any couple-related issues in a welcoming, professional and non-judgmental environment. Through this path, the couple will be able to grow and better orient themselves in the complicated world of dyadic dynamics, learn conflict management and healthy communication skills.
Empathy and emotional validation will become the keys to access the other, in a path that will offer benefit to both parties jointly and individually.
Adolescence is the most delicate, confusing and precious moment of human existence. Approaching adulthood, without a solid and balanced background of personal experience, can be even more difficult.
We believe in “early intervention” as a way to prevent more serious and deeper damage to the mental health of young adults who will soon have to have the world outside.
Here you will find a fresh but very competent environment in which you can feel completely at ease and face the changes and challenges of this phase of your life, talking about your daily struggles and deeper concerns.
Our aim is helping you create a wealth of emotional skills ranging from problem solving to emotional regulation, passing through the resolution of conflicts with your past and with your family. We will lay together the foundations for a solid and healthy identity, which will be your key to a fulfilling future.
Leaving your home, settling into a place that is completely new to you, moving away from your loved ones, rebuilding relationships… these are just some of the challenges that those who come to study or work in Italy have to face.
It is completely normal to feel lost and alone at first, however stress, anxiety and depression can easily set in.
Being away from home does not necessarily have to be synonymous with vulnerability, but very often it is exactly like that.
Our mission is to help you find serenity again, making you feel at home away from home.
At Therapsy, each therapy is tailor-made for the patient, starting from the assessment process, to build a highly specialized and personalized treatment path.
At Therapsy, we believe each person is unique and important. That’s why we conduct a thorough assessment process to understand the individual’s functioning, as well as the dynamics and processes behind their discomfort. Only after this assessment do we create a specialized, personalized therapeutic plan that serves as the gold standard for addressing the specific issues the patient presents. And of course, all of this is infused with a good dose of kindness and empathy!
We’ll do our best! At Therapsy, we have therapists who speak several languages, with English being the most commonly and fluently spoken by expats and foreign students. Feel free to call and ask! We’ll let you know right away which languages are available for your sessions.
Our therapists are top-notch! We carefully and thoroughly select them to ensure the best service for our patients. However, if you don’t feel a connection with your therapist, it’s completely normal—sometimes it’s just a matter of personal chemistry! In that case, we’ll work with you to understand the reasons and match you with a different therapist who better suits your needs.
At Therapsy, our primary approach is rooted in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). However, just like a bow needs more than one arrow, we believe that an integrated approach is the most effective way to provide meaningful and lasting help to our patients. That’s why our therapists are trained in various therapeutic methods, including EMDR, Schema Therapy, Metacognitive Interpersonal Therapy, Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy, and Constructivist Cognitive Therapy, among others.
The right one for you! Based on the information gathered during the assessment phase, our therapists will determine the best approach for your specific needs. From that point on, you’ll work together to address your concerns, knowing that you can count on your therapist’s solid expertise and clinical experience. Therapsy: your multilingual psychotherapy practice in town
I am Dr. Francesca Boccalari, psychotherapist and clinical director of Therapsy.
My mission is to create a safe, healthy and innovative environment, where people in need can meet competent and very well trained young therapists, who will always work to the highest standards and under my clinical supervision.
–
Dr. Francesca Boccalari is a highly experienced and qualified psychotherapist with a passion for helping her patients live more fulfilling lives. She uses a variety of innovative and scientifically validated treatment approaches, and she places a strong emphasis on the therapist-patient relationship. She is also committed to making psychotherapy accessible to all, which is why she was among the first psychotherapists to promote therapy in English in Italy.
Tailor-made therapies, the best scientifically validated treatment protocols and years of clinical experience are the basic ingredients of our treatment philosophy.
Everything will always be seasoned with empathy and kindness, in a non-judgmental environment that you will always find ready to listen and validate.
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most widespread, effective and reliable models of treatment and understanding of psychopathological disorders. The World Health Organization considers it the treatment of choice for anxiety disorders, as found in numerous scientific studies. The basic assumption of CBT is that problems are not characterized by the situations themselves, but by our way of experiencing and interpreting them. In fact, it postulates that there is a complex connection between our thoughts, our emotions and our behaviors and when these thoughts are dysfunctional the foundations of emotional distress are laid. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) therefore aims to help patients identify recurrent thoughts and dysfunctional patterns of reasoning and interpreting the reality, in order to replace and/or integrate them with more functional beliefs.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a scientifically proven technique commonly used in the treatment of several trauma-related disorders, such as post-traumatic stress disorder. This approach uses alternating eye movements, or other forms of bilateral stimulation, to re-establish the excitatory/inhibitory balance of the brain synapses, thus allowing better communication between the cerebral hemispheres and the "flow" of the traumatic memory, previously blocked in the memory. EMDR cannot be considered a treatment, but a technique, which is very useful when integrated into the psychotherapy process. In particular, in collecting information of patient’s past and attachment story, it is possible that "small or big" traumas emerge in the patient's experience. These traumas can be successfully addressed and overcome thanks to the use of this technique. Overcoming traumas related to childhood and beyond will allow you to leave the past in the past and face the present with more serenity.
Rational emotional behavioral psychotherapy (REBT) promotes emotional well-being through the application of scientifically proven protocols within a short therapy process, but with long-lasting results. REBT is an action-oriented therapy that teaches a person how to identify, challenge and replace irrational thoughts (the cause of psychological distress) with more rational and healthy beliefs, able to guarantee psychophysical well-being and the achievement of oneself goals. Rational emotional therapy was developed in 1955 by Dr. Albert Ellis, founder of the REBT Institute. To date, it is recognized as one of the most effective therapies in the treatment of anxiety disorders, pathological anger and depression.
Schema therapy is a type of talk therapy that focuses on schemas. Schemas are frameworks, or belief systems, through which people understand themselves and the world around them. Individuals begin forming schemas in childhood, particularly around their family and immediate environment. These schemas then inform thoughts, emotions, and behavior and may be maladaptive when they are unbalanced or unrealistic. For example, a child may learn, from what happens or to him/her, that he/she must always be perfect, or that he/she can never trust anyone. This may contribute to anxiety or other mental health conditions in the future. Schema therapy, through particular techniques also based on imaginative work, aims to gradually replace maladaptive schemas with healthier ones so that a person can experience less emotional distress. This may help patients with self-esteem, relationships with others and daily functioning.
Spending too much time planning, problem-solving, daydreaming, or thinking negative or random thoughts can be draining. It can also make you more likely to experience stress, anxiety and symptoms of depression. Practicing mindfulness exercises can help you direct your attention away from this kind of thinking and engage with the world around you. Mindfulness is a type of meditation in which you focus on being intensely aware of what you're sensing and feeling in the moment, without interpretation or judgment. Practicing mindfulness involves breathing methods, guided imagery, and other practices to relax the body and mind and help reduce stress.
In some cases it is best to precede the start of therapy with a diagnosis. The psychodiagnostic evaluation allows the therapist and the patient to better understand the emotional problem and consequently plan the treatment in a personalized way. The assessment tools are the clinical interview and structured interviews or questionnaires. The person is accompanied on a journey of discovery, which helps him/her to focus on the issues and to be more aware of the dynamics that lie behind them. Furthermore, psychodiagnostic assessment is the best way to address the resources deployed so far by the patient to manage his/her discomfort and those to be strengthened to deal with it in the future. All this, will help the therapy process, which will be made more targeted and effective.

In Italy, only those who are registered in the Register of Psychologists as a Clinical Psychologist or Psychotherapist can practice the profession. However, there are differences between these two roles. The clinical psychologist is someone who has completed his university studies, but has not continued with specialization and, therefore, does not have the necessary training for the treatment of psychological or psychiatric disorders. The psychotherapist, on the other hand, is a psychologist who has also carried out a specialization lasting 4 years, which allows him to have a curative role in the treatment of mental disorders or, more generally, of psychological distress, through scientifically validated techniques and approaches.
The psychiatrist is a medical doctor and, as such, can prescribe drugs to alleviate symptoms and mental distress. The psychiatrist can also be a psychotherapist, but like everyone, to become one, he must have attended specialization school.
For your mental health, rely only on certified psychotherapists!
You can consult the costs of the therapy in the dedicated section.
Sessions typically last between 45 and 60 minutes, offering flexibility to ensure that key topics are addressed without feeling rushed. The exact duration may vary based on the depth of the issues discussed and the pace that feels most comfortable for you. Our priority is to provide a space that supports meaningful progress in each session.
It’s difficult to determine exactly how long your therapy journey will last without first understanding the specific reasons behind your discomfort. After an initial assessment, your therapist will provide feedback on the issues you’ve shared and, together, you’ll set goals. Based on these, the therapist can offer an estimate of the therapy’s duration and the recommended frequency of sessions to achieve the best results. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the length of therapy can change over time, as new topics or situations may emerge, affecting the course and outcome of your journey. Regardless, any adjustments will always be discussed and agreed upon with your therapist—nothing will happen without your knowledge and consent.
Therapy goals can be tailored to fit the time and budget you have available. Be open with your therapist about your financial situation, and together you can prioritize the most important issues and find a solution that works for you, ensuring you still benefit from the sessions.
Therapsy recommends that you first verify whether your insurance covers all or part of the costs of psychotherapy. If it does, ask your insurance company what specific information needs to be included on the invoice. Once you have the exact details, your therapist will ensure the invoice is prepared accordingly, and you can submit it for reimbursement following your insurance company’s guidelines.
Absolutely. In Italy, psychotherapy is classified as a medical expense, meaning you can claim a portion of the cost as a tax deduction. To do so, be sure to keep all your invoices and related documentation. When filing your taxes, you will need to include these expenses under the medical deduction section. We also recommend consulting a tax professional to ensure you are taking full advantage of the available deductions and understand the specific percentage that can be deducted.
After the initial sessions, your therapist will assess whether a psychiatric consultation and medication could help improve your well-being. If needed, they can refer you to a trusted psychiatrist who is verified by Therapsy and part of our team. Your therapist will continue to collaborate with the psychiatrist throughout your treatment to ensure you receive the full benefit from both therapy and medication.
