Dr. Matteo Innocenti is an English-speaking psychiatrist and psychotherapist in Milan. He receives patients in person in Milan and works online with people living elsewhere in Italy and abroad, in English and Italian, with people from 16 years old onwards.
He is qualified in both psychiatry and psychotherapy, which is less common than it sounds and changes what is possible in a single consultation. A psychiatrist can diagnose and prescribe; a psychotherapist does the ongoing work. Most people who need both end up managing two professionals who rarely speak to each other. He believes explicitly in combining the two, and every treatment plan is built for the individual rather than assembled from a default.
He graduated with honours in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Florence and specialised in Psychiatry and in Psychotherapy. He has years of experience in hospital settings as well as in private practice.
He is a recognised expert in eco-anxiety: the distress, dread and paralysis people feel about the climate and the state of the planet. It is a young field and a real one, and it is routinely dismissed as an opinion rather than treated as a clinical experience. For people who carry it, finding a psychiatrist who takes it seriously is not straightforward.
He treats anxiety, depression, trauma and eating disorders, and works with neurodevelopmental conditions including the autism spectrum and ADHD. His therapeutic work is grounded in CBT and he also works with EMDR for trauma.
His stated priority is the therapeutic relationship: trust, empathy and collaboration, so that a patient is comfortable and supported whether they are in therapy, taking medication, or both.
You do not have to pick him yourself. At Therapsy every person is matched by a human being, not by an algorithm: our clinical team reads your request, and if Dr. Innocenti is the right fit for what you are bringing, they will introduce you. The first call is free, and it is there to check that the fit is real before anything begins.
Fewer than 1 in 100 therapists joins the Therapsy team. Dr. Innocenti was personally vetted by our Clinical Director, Dr. Francesca A. Boccalari, on three non-negotiable criteria: he shares our values, he speaks at least one language beyond Italian, and he has a physical practice in Milan where you can meet in person, not only online.
Matteo Innocenti does not work alone. He takes part in Therapsy’s internal clinical supervision, a standing group where clinicians bring their most demanding cases, train together and ask for help when a situation calls for it. Every clinician in the network, Case Managers included, can turn to our Clinical Director for clinical questions and further training, and Therapsy runs regular professional training with senior therapists and external trainers. Scheduling, invoicing, payments and the rest of the paperwork are handled by Therapsy, so that his time with you stays clinical work and nothing else. On your side, the same platform gives you one place to see your sessions, invoices, payments and documents.
At Therapsy you do not have to pick your clinician from a list: you start by speaking with Dr. Francesca Boccalari, our Clinical Director, who listens to what you are going through and matches you with the person she believes is right for you: Matteo Innocenti, or one of his colleagues. Then you have a free introductory call, and only after that do you decide whether to start.
And if the fit turns out not to be right, you are not back at square one. Dr. Boccalari and her team find you another clinician inside Therapsy, at no cost, without you having to tell your story from the beginning. Choosing a therapist while you are struggling, in a language that is not your own, is a lot to ask of a person. That is the part we take on.
Dr. Innocenti is a registered medical doctor with the Italian Medical Association. He receives in Milan and works online with patients across Italy and abroad.
Further reading from Therapsy: what EMDR therapy actually is, how an adult ADHD assessment works.
Yes, and he is one of the few clinicians in Italy working on it seriously. Eco-anxiety is the dread and paralysis people feel about the climate, and it is not a distortion to be corrected: the danger is real, so the clinical question is how to stay functional and engaged rather than how to stop worrying.
Cognitive behavioural therapy as the base, with EMDR when trauma is part of the picture. Being a psychiatrist as well means the choice between therapy, medication or both is made inside one clinical judgement rather than negotiated between two professionals.
